My weekly top 10 (42): (oct 12 – 18, 2008)
-
1. JACKBERRY8225 – the moruge
2. VAMPIREHUNTER329 – haunted or not?
3. GAURAV PANCHAL – dreams are only dreams
4. DANA HENDERSON – the missing children
5. CRAAIG – blue tit blues
6. CATHYWRITES1 – an angel in uniform
7. MATTHEW – remember the good times
8. MISSPAIJAKAY – all we know
9. JIMBO13 - c
10. GOCUBSGO25 – revolution – the beginning
-
JACKBERRY8225 – Well, well. This one is a fast-paced thriller. Once you start, you will stop only on the last word. Jack in this spine chilling thriller of a short story “the moruge” has a young boy Jeffrey Ryann Goldstien waking up in a hospital bed all tied up. He doesn’t remember how he reached there. He finds his way to the morgue. Is he dead? Good question. Horrific!
-
VAMPIREHUNTER329 – If Jack can write a horror tale, Katherine has faced it all in real life, real time. Have you undergone supernatural experiences where you sight ‘people’ moving around your home? Scary, eh! She in her short story “haunted or not?” has moved into a new house. Strange things begin to happen. A ‘girl’ is sighted. What is your opinion? Truth is stranger than fiction!
-
GAURAV PANCHAL – We all dream each night. Some go sleepless too while others have no dreams. Still, we all prefer technicolor dreams. And where dreams end reality begins for it is the beginning of another new day. Gaurav in his poem “dreams are only dreams” feels catching stars can be a dream. Aim, life, reality, etc are all dreams. He himself is a dream. WOW!
-
DANA HENDERSON – When we are at our wit’s end, we look out for the meaning in life. What is life and who we are. These become the most crucial issues for which we must find the answers. Dana is also on one such self-discovering journey. She in her poem “the missing children” is trying to find the meaning and understanding of herself and her life. DISCOVERY!
-
CRAAIG – Hmm. This is a true account of a bird – the blue tit. Craaig in his poem “blue tit blues” has his daughter see the cat bring in the blue tit. He took the bird to safety and care. Alas, there was not much hope for the bird to survive. The bird recuperated only to bid the adieu. The family was crestfallen but not before fondly recalling the bird’s strength. Memorable
-
CATHYWRITES1 – We do go to the hospital to visit our near and dear ones. Have we ever paid any attention to the nurses or care givers, who carry on with the thankless task of providing the best care that others will not even try? Cathy’s in her essay “an angel in uniform” writes about her sister Rosemary, who works in a nursing home caring for its senior residents. ANGELIC.
-
MATTHEW – This one will take your breath away through the inspirational message it imparts. Through our dark phases, we never go near light. Positive thoughts do not touch us for we are weighed down by the negativity. Matthew in his poem “remember the good times” has faced some rough period. But he was determined to remember the good times. Lessons from life well spent. AWE INSPIRING!
-
MISSPAIJAKAY – If you are looking out for a fun fare, this one is it. You will have a roller coaster ride. Paija’s novel “all we know” has a girl Paija (ahem!), who is a designer and an amateur photographer. She gets an offer from “Paramore” Band members to accompany them on their musical tour and cover them pictorially for her magazine. More fun on the anvil. ENJOY!
-
JIMBO13 – Hey ya, all adventure seekers! Your camping nights out ends here. What excitement is in hold when we go for a camp and discover new and virgin land. Jim in his article “c” is on a camp with his friends. Wild natural surroundings. No human dwellings except the nature. Campfire is lit and they hungrily eat. Bugs don’t matter. Its time to sleep…and DREAM!
-
GOCUBSGO25 – Now a days, I am reading lotta science fiction. At the rate I am going, it won’t be far, when I will start rattling my own sci-fi books. This one will thrill the cockles of sci-fi lovers’ hearts. Brett in his book “revolution – the beginning” begins with the law of unity. Many countries are undergoing revolutions. The law is fine but he doesn’t want it implemented. Why? Read on.

(Well, Canada is going for elections on Oct 14 (Tues), 2008. Our politicians are not as well known as their US counterparts but they do make news nationally. So, this week is devoted to them. Let’s see, how they fare in a few days. Enjoy their ‘wink and miss’ performance. Some call our politicians a ‘joke®’. So, you may enjoy a joke’s joke.

Post turtle is a phrase that has been used in political discussion of various countries, including the U.S. and Canada, based on an old joke. Various politicians have been referenced by the joke or used the joke, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Stephen Harper, and Sarah Palin.

An old rancher is talking about politics with a young man from the city. He compares a politician to a "post turtle". The young man doesn't understand and asks him what a post turtle is. The old man says, "When you're driving down a country road and you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. You know he didn't get up there by himself. He doesn't belong there; he can't get anything done while he's up there; and you just want to help the poor, dumb thing down."

William Kennedy reviews the book THE NATURAL The Misunderstood Presidency of Bill Clinton by Joe Klein who quotes Clinton on his own achievement: "If you see a turtle sitting on top of a fence post, it didn't get there by accident". Molly Ivins is attributed to usage for George W. Bush.)

For the uninitiated in Canada’s politics, we’ve:
1. Conservative Party of Canada – Stephen Harper
2. Liberal – Stephane Dion
3. NDP – Jack Layton
4. Bloc Quebecois – Gilles Duceppe
5. Green Party – Elizabeth May
-
A 75-year-old Alberta rancher was chatting with his doctor when the topic got around to Stephane Dion and his bid to become the next prime minister..
The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Dion is a "post turtle".
“What’s a post turtle?” the doctor asked.
The old rancher said. "When your driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.”
“What’s that got to do with Dion?” the doctor asked.
The wise old rancher gave a wry smile: "You know he didn't get up there by himself, doesn't belong
up there, doesn't know what to do while he's up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with...”
*

Sometimes political stump speeches don’t always come out sounding quite the way they were intended. For instance, at a chamber of commerce luncheon in Halifax earlier today, Liberal MP Scott Brison was introducing his party leader Stephane Dion, also leader of the official opposition.
“Throughout this campaign,” Brison said, “Stephen Harper has done more to attack Stephane Dion than he has to offer his own ideas for the future. That is because Mr. Harper has no plan, he has no vision, he has no ideas. That is why he is acting more like a leader of the opposition...”
